Peaks and Summits 2 blog…..
April 2024 saw us crossing back over the Bay of Biscay to Spain from Plymouth, to grab some spring sunshine, and get back onto the roads of the Spanish Picos and Portuguese Serra da Estrela, to enjoy a repeat run of our 2023 event.
There was a great demand for the trip when we announced it at short notice in 2023, and some people missed out. So before the boat had docked back into Plymouth back in October, we had already started to plan series 2 of Peaks and Summits! As well as a number of customers that couldn’t make October, we also had a number of customers that simply couldn’t wait to get back to this driving mecca, to experience it in different cars for 2024!
With the waiting list from 2023 and the repeaters from the last trip, the tour quickly sold out once again and certainly turned out to be as much of a success as series 1!
One of those customers that opted to join us and enjoy it all over again, was GTTourz customer and now great friend Matt, who decided he was going to treat his new 992 Dakar to a spot of mountain driving, which also included showing it a few of the lesser travelled roads in the mountains…. more later!
It’s worth saying, whilst writing this blog, a comment we heard a number of times while discussing our latest section of road at the coffee stops, “no matter how many times you do these roads on a tour, there is always something different to deal with!”
So if you are worrying about booking a trip in the future that you have done before, you can never remember it all anyway, and with weather conditions, it’s rarely the road conditions are the same twice. So it’s always a great challenge, and most of all you will always meet someone new that shares your passion for a road trip.
As an example, the roads over the Serra de Estrela on ‘series 2’ were far from ideal! With temperatures down in the low single figures, and the added wind chill at close to 6000ft, meant it felt more like -5. This, coupled with being in the cloud base meant sadly the views were pretty much non existent, but we believe there is always an upside, and this one meant the roads were pretty much deserted!
