For the love of driving

Peaks and Summits 2 blog…..

April 2024 saw us crossing back over the Bay of Biscay to Spain from Plymouth, to grab some spring sunshine, and get back onto the roads of the Spanish Picos and Portuguese Serra da Estrela, to enjoy a repeat run of our 2023 event.

There was a great demand for the trip when we announced it at short notice in 2023, and some people missed out. So before the boat had docked back into Plymouth back in October, we had already started to plan series 2 of Peaks and Summits! As well as a number of customers that couldn’t make October, we also had a number of customers that simply couldn’t wait to get back to this driving mecca, to experience it in different cars for 2024!

With the waiting list from 2023 and the repeaters from the last trip, the tour quickly sold out once again and certainly turned out to be as much of a success as series 1!

One of those customers that opted to join us and enjoy it all over again, was GTTourz customer and now great friend Matt, who decided he was going to treat his new 992 Dakar to a spot of mountain driving, which also included showing it a few of the lesser travelled roads in the mountains…. more later!

It’s worth saying, whilst writing this blog, a comment we heard a number of times while discussing our latest section of road at the coffee stops, “no matter how many times you do these roads on a tour, there is always something different to deal with!”

So if you are worrying about booking a trip in the future that you have done before, you can never remember it all anyway, and with weather conditions, it’s rarely the road conditions are the same twice. So it’s always a great challenge, and most of all you will always meet someone new that shares your passion for a road trip.

As an example, the roads over the Serra de Estrela on ‘series 2’ were far from ideal! With temperatures down in the low single figures, and the added wind chill at close to 6000ft, meant it felt more like -5. This, coupled with being in the cloud base meant sadly the views were pretty much non existent, but we believe there is always an upside, and this one meant the roads were pretty much deserted!

For a lot of the drivers and navigators on this event it was a journey of discovery. Whilst we had a number of repeaters, the majority of them being regular GTTourerz, the Iberian roads of North West Spain and Portugal was virgin ground. With the perfect tarmac and quiet roads they were immediately in their happy place.

It is always great to have some new GTTourerz along for the drive, and this event had a few. It was great to see them really enjoy the roads and challenges that the route threw at them. Two of them had joined up as a result of our friend and customer Petrol Ped’s reviews of our past tours that he had captured on film for us, so it was a real pleasure to meet these guys and enjoy their company.

We are pleased to say, our Swiss friend with his little blue Lotus will be joining us again in April 2025. We also hope to see Richard and his red rocket on an event very soon as well, but big well done to him after he conquered his fear of high passes with flying colours!

Then there was Aamir and his beautiful one of one Pista, who was a road trip virgin until we met in Plymouth. We are so pleased to say he is now hooked, and we will be seeing that stunning Ferrari in 2025 more than once. He certainly found his driving boots quickly and fitted in from lights out!

Anyway, back to Matt and his Dakar from earlier. Wow, simply wow, how much did this car entertain all of us all week. Seeing it regularly appear in our mirrors, in all its Martini glory, will be a life long memory for us. He was also acting as an unofficial camera man on tour, often leaving early from stops to capture us all on route. He loved the noise and seeing the cars, and we loved seeing the Martini livery appear ahead as well as the footage he captured, cheers Matt!

Having the privilege of driving the Dakar down to our lunch at Doc Douro, on the shores of the river, will be a drive I will never forget either! Cheers again Matt, what a weapon that car was!

Another great treat on the event was to wake up at Vidago on the second morning, to see a couple of very special Porsches had been delivered to the hotel, to enjoy the lesser known Porsche test route. We didn’t have a 911R or GT2RS in our group, but we did have some exceptional cars that got to enjoy the same road in both directions during the duration of the tour!

Overall the roads and company, coupled with great hotels and food, meant they all fell in love with ‘Series 2’ of our Peaks & Summits tour. After the chequered flag had fallen in Santander, and we enjoyed a post event last dinner on the boat home, we were so pleased to say that everyone loved adding this tour to their road trip memory bank!

Overall ‘Series 2’ of Peaks and Summits was a real success!
