For the love of driving

Our 3 day Dambusters Tour took us on to some of the best driving roads that Wales has to offer that encompassed the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia National Park.

The route included a great mix of challenging, fast “A & B” roads that let everyone explore the car’s capabilities in both wet and dry conditions, which certainly added to the challenge of the tour!

There was also some more sedate scenic sections along the route that certainly required less right foot and more of a half throttle approach, but equally rewarded both driver and co-driver with great views of the Welsh coast and countryside, well when the low-level cloud allowed us a glimpse!

We had a fabulous mix of cars and people for the event, who started their journey at the 5* Celtic Manor Resort, heading up to the epic roads of the Brecon Beacons. We included the Black Mountain roads before heading for lunch in the Dolaucothi Arms, voted Countryfile country pub of the year in 2019. We then headed up to Devils Bridge, and the beautiful remote landscape of the Elan Valley, home to the original testing of the Dambusters Bombs.

Home for the next 2 nights was the luxury hotel and spa at Lake Vyrnwy, where the cars took a well-deserved breather, whilst everyone headed to the bar to partake in a few well-earned beers after a full day of driving, before meeting up for a group meal in the bar.

After a restful nights sleep and a hearty Welsh breakfast, our journey continued as we headed west to Aberdyfi and Barmouth, where the amazing driving road hugged the coastline of West Wales. The views, with Snowdonia National Park acting as a backdrop, were just spectacular and made this section of the route special, one that has to be included in any road trip around Cardigan Bay.

With Snowdonia in view, we made for the mountain roads of the park via Harlech and its famous castle, before heading up to the top of Snowdon via Pen-Y-Gwryd. With its dramatic scenery and high altitude roads, Wales tallest mountain made for a complete contrast to the roads in the morning along the coast. These were a real test especially as the weather closed in as we reached the summit!

We wanted to leave the best to last and the final leg was not going to leave anyone disappointed. Some of Wales best roads can be found around Ffestiniog, and the B4391, for us is at the top of that list. A must-do in both directions!  This stretch of tarmac has all the ingredients that make up the perfect drivers road, track smooth tarmac, elevation changes, bend after bend, which means you have to be alert and ready for its challenges…especially in the wet!!

After a great last afternoon, it was time to head back to the hotel and the group meal in the Tower restaurant, where everyone had a fabulous 3-course dinner which was all included with their entry.

All in all the Dambusters 2019 Tour was a great success and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their experience with GTTourz.
